ADINKRA SYMBOLS:
Adinkra are visual symbols, originally created by the Ashanti of
Ghana and the Gyaman of Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa, that represent concepts
or aphorisms. Adinkra are used extensively in fabrics, pottery, logos and
advertising. They are incorporated into walls and other architectural features.
Fabric adinkra are often made by woodcut sign writing as well as screen
printing. Adinkra symbols appear on some traditional akan gold weights. The
symbols are also carved on stools for domestic and ritual use. Tourism has led
to new departures in the use of the symbols in such items as T shirts and
jewelry.
The symbols have a decorative function but also represent
objects that encapsulate evocative messages that convey traditional wisdom,
aspects of life or the environment. There are many different symbols with
distinct meanings, often linked with proverbs. In the words of Anthony Appiah,
they were one of the means in a pre-literate society for "supporting the
transmission of a complex and nuanced body of practice and belief".

"return and get it"
symbol of importance of learning from the past
Sankofa is a word in the Akan language of Ghana that
translates as "reach back and get it" (san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to fetch, to seek and take) and also
refers to the Asante Adinkra symbol represented
either by a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back, or
as a stylised heart shape. Sankofa is often associated with the proverb, “Se
wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi," which translates as: "It is
not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten."
The Sankofa symbol
appears frequently in traditional Akan art, and has also been adopted as an
important symbol in an African-American and African Diaspora context to represent the need to
reflect on the past to build a successful future. It
symbolizes taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present
in order to make positive progress through the benevolent use of knowledge.
